Location: China Brotsky and Seed Galleries, Tides Converge, 1007 General Kennedy Avenue, San Francisco

What: ArtSeed children, artists, and other folks from a broad range of ages, professional fields, and cultural heritage, are engaged in interdisciplinary collaborative arts projects all of which will culminate in a three-week Fine Arts Summer Intensive and a one-month interactive exhibition in the Presidio (a National Park) in San Francisco. Core participants include 50 K-5th grade students and staff from Booker T. Washington Community Service Center who will connect with U.S. Veterans and foreign students via the internet and the postal service. Hands-on explorations and exchanges of students’ environmental concerns are given tangible and presentable form with guidance from a variety of artists and guest presenters. Participants are provided reclaimed materials plus fine arts tools and training that generate the discipline and expressive designs essential in effective sociopolitical climate activism!

Why: Our polarized world often seems incapable of coming to terms with catastrophic scientific forecasts. Collaborative projects, national and international exchanges, and the age-old art-making process builds bridges between people of all ages and between communities from radically different sectors of society. ArtSeed’s exhibition aims to promote awareness of earth’s fragility and inspire more activities that create dialog. We are creating outlets for participants and a larger audience to express how they feel about nature and humanity’s responsibilities toward maintaining a healthy planet. Social justice and environmental issues are connected as we question poor public policy and our own personal habits. Young people are empowered to look for solutions through rigorous artistic explorations combined with critical thinking resulting in optimism. We are grappling with the changes we are wreaking upon our environment by exploring the issues and using our art to awaken others to the need for all of us to change.

“Especially topics such as death, afterlife, heaven, hell, reincarnation … We fool ourselves when we think kids don’t think about stuff like this. To not have an outlet or to be denied one because it’s just not something we like to talk about is sad and a missed opportunity to get a peek inside their amazing landscape.” -Ymke Dioquino
